Anti Hot Spot Tape AHSTsm

XL Anti Hot Spot Tape is a special polyethylene foam tape designed to insulate the poythene tunnel cover from the steel frame of the polytunnel, which can get very hot in summer. It also isolates it from the rough galvanised surface of the steel frame which can cause chafing and weakening of the cover, especially in blustery, windy conditions.

XL Anti Hot Spot tape has been specially developed using a polyethylene foam tape. Some foam tapes use a PVC (poly vinyl chloride) foam, and there is evidence that when the tape becomes old it can damage the polythene cover, caused by the chloride content of the foam.  Chloride has an effect on the UV stabilisers in the film which will reduce their life by more than 50%.

XL Anti Hot Spot tape uses an aggressive glue which sets about 3 hours after application. We use a 3mm thick foam, because then the memory in the foam is not so strong as to lift the adhesive from the frame before it has set.

Widths available are 19mm, 25mm, 30mm and 50mm and all rolls are 9 metres long.

Tip.  If you are building a new tunnel make sure that all steel work is free from grease and oil which is applied during the bending process. Wipe down with a methylated spirits rag to clean this.

If you are re cladding an old tunnel make sure that it is free from dust.

Press the tape down hard onto the steel work. This will start the setting process and ensure that the tape sticks firmly to the  steel and won’t creep round later when it gets hot.

If you are building a new tunnel, apply the tape to as many places as possible whilst the tunnel is on the ground, not up in the air.

Cover all brackets, clamps etc with tape to isolate all parts of the polythene from the steel.
